Don't these patios look lovely? The weather hasn't been nice this spring but already I think I'll miss my patio once it does become nice. I guess that is what vacation and my families homes in the suburbs are for. I find the porch with the city view as energizing as a I find a quiet back little porch surrounded by greenery. I think they are both spots I like to spend my time because they energize me and recharge me in different ways. This weekend I'll be spending time in the latter, I am headed to see family in WI and I think it will be nice to get some time with family, time to read my new book and enjoy time away from the city.

I made a black magic cake with triple fudge chocolate chip frosting and a chocolate heart for every 10 years they've been together. I was not happy packing for a recent trip to LA. I had no denim that I liked. Ugh! I had to ask myself what I was thinking the last couple times I went shopping for denim. Here were my three biggest mistakes. 1) I bought a pair of wide legs that are too short to wear with heels... not a good look. 2) I bought them a size too big... another not so good look. 3) I bought a pair of skinnies that are a real puzzle. When I first put them on I find it very difficult to sit down and then I spend the rest of the day pulling them up. They have ZERO retention. I was so disappointed with how the denim wore and washed that I got into this funk of not wanting to shop for denim at all. In the mean time, my younger sister gave me a couple pairs of jeans so I wore those to avoid wasting money on another pair of bad denim. This weekend, I am finally going to rid my closet of the bad denim. Life's too short to wear ugly denim! My favorites as of lately have been skinnies but I feel my go-to outfits have become a bit too predictable and I've been wanting to switch it up. So now after my long rant I want to say I found something really fun and exciting... I bought myself a pair of Seven for all Mankind bell-bottoms!!!!!! My first pair since 7th grade and I couldn't be more excited!!! Oh, and just FYI the key to buying jeans that will fit you after you leave the fitting room is go with the ones that are a little too tight. Are you a little uncomfortable in those? Well do they button? If so, that's your size. They will stretch! I recently learned this from a couple of co-workers when we went on a shopping trip.

And finally, a couple suggestions on how to wash new denim from Nicholas Morine.

Turn the jeans inside out while washing them – not only does this reduce strain and abrasion of the facing material but it also covers metal portions of the pants such as the buttons or zippers.

An old helpful hint passed down from many experts in the fabric care industry would be to include a cup of white vinegar in your first two washes to seal the colour and dye within the fabric – minimizing fabric bleeding and helping to set the dye into the jeans, improving colour retention.

As always, cold water wash is the best, and is recommended for nearly all articles of clothing that do not need to be professionally laundered. A cold water wash ensures retention of size, and a reduced likelihood of colour bleeding.

This room looks so relaxing with the big blanket on the bed and the slippers at the foot of the bed. It reminds me a bit of my old room with the Victorian style dresser, the light wood flooring and the white door. Although, my old room didn't have the big bay window and the chandelier. But on the topic of chandeliers... in college, I really wanted a chandelier for my room senior year. Turns out it's wasn't so easy to talk my dad into swapping out the light fixture in my townhouse for the short 9 months I would be there. I am kind of over the chandelier dream for now but it still reminds me of the that funny story. My dad got a kick out of the fact that I put that much thought into the decor of my college bedroom.

I was thrilled to start the New Year interviewing ThisNext’s lifestyle tastemaker, Lulu Powers, on entertaining and decor. She is such an amazing, inspiring woman and she has so many great ideas to share! She loves making people smile through her fun, unexpected and pretty decor. You can see how her fun whimsical decorating style would just make you smile. I’ve read her book Lulu Powers Food to Flowers: Simple, Stylish Food for Easy Entertaining and I fell in love with her home featured in the December 2010 Lonny Issue which I blogged about here. Sara Plath: Did you plan a party for New Year’s?

Lulu Powers: We spent New Year’s with my husband’s family and there are lots of them… it was fun, it was great and it was low key. We were in bed before midnight. We watched the ball drop in New York though, since I am from the East Coast.

Entertaining Questions

SP: What is your favorite type of event to plan for?

LP: I love all of them! I am sitting here on the floor of my office… and I am coming up with a menu for a woman who loves food. It’s her birthday and her husband gave me to her as like a birthday present! So I am planning the meal for sixteen for a sit down dinner. She said she wanted casual but elegant. I was thinking what’s a good word for casual and elegant? I said... we will make it chic but fun, we will make the table fun and everywhere you look there will be little points of interest in the house. For me, that is fun to work on because I really enjoy food and I am excited about the whole experience.

SP: So is that how you’d say your creative process starts… sitting on the floor of your office brainstorming? What gets you going with creative planning?

LP: Well you know what? There are inspirations everywhere. On Saturday morning, I am doing a baby shower [for a baby girl] and the woman having it said 'you can do whatever you want because you’re so creative. I don’t care what you do'. So I said 'okay', and it wasn’t necessarily for me to do the décor, but she really just want yummy food. So, I was downtown after Christmas and I was in Boston for the Holidays. First, I was in New York then Connecticut then Boston for my mom’s 75th birthday, in the blizzard, which was fun though because I got so much inspiration when I was in Boston. I went to the most amazing Museum called the Isabella Sewart Gardner Museum and that inspired me in so many different ways. Also, I went to the Museum of Fine Arts which just re-opened in Boston. I get my inspiration for everywhere and anything. My biggest inspiration for the party on Saturday was this hot pink fabric (see below) with these big round circles. It’s this beautiful fabric and it’s just fun! Anyone that sees that, it’s going to put a smile on their face. It’s elegant, it’s chic, and it’s just beautiful. I plan to get a white beautiful vase downtown and these great bright pink flowers, a 24" wide white square cake stand that is going to sit on the coffee table and I am going to have cheeses, grapes, other fruits and breads. I will have smaller cake stands that are white and all different sizes for these little donut muffins and mini raspberry muffins that are from my book. Also, we are going to put these different color candles up everywhere and they come in these beautiful glasses. That to me is exciting because it is going to look so great and people will definitely love it. I am using three of the same exact pitchers. One is going to be used for the pink non-alcoholic drink, one will be used for white flowers on the table and one will be used for my cranberry iced-tea mint lemonade. You can use pitchers for everything. It’s different and fun. You know what else is [very versatile]? I’m big into using trays to set things up. When you’re entertaining, I think it is always great to have water and bubble water out separately with glasses. If people are thirsty they don’t have to go to the bar, they don’t have to wait and they know it is there. I am big into recycling and that is why I love to use glass pitchers.

SP: In my research, I see that you’ve catered and planned events for Bill Clinton, Madonna and Will Smith to name a few. Can you tell me a little something about that and what that was like?

LP: Bill Clinton loved my Caramel French Brownies, they are in my book! By the way on Saturday, I am also putting out Mini Caramel French Brownies that I’m cutting up so they are bite sized and putting them out with chocolates. I love to put chocolates out after dinner even before you serve dessert, stick them on the table on a great plate even if it’s a salad plate. I’m into using everything you have and getting great things you can use over and over. Like I said, any pitcher you can use for flowers, you can use it for anything, you cannot go wrong and I think it can be a great gift!

SP: Anything else that is a great gift or practical for entertaining?

LP: Cutting boards. You can cut up pizza and to put on it, you can put your cheeses on it, and you can put glasses down it. It doesn’t matter. A cutting board is another serving tray. You know what I like to do when I give something? I love linen cocktail napkins and my friend just moved into a new house and I bought four sets of them. I bought paper and linen in gray and then I bought another thing and I put a list of uses for the cocktail napkins besides just putting it out and it is kind of fun.

SP: What are some of those other uses?

LP: You know when you are putting cold bottles of things out on the table and you don’t want to make a mark if you have a wooden table... or it looks nice just layered. I like the layered look, even if you have a tablecloth stick a cocktail napkin out to set your glasses on or put the extra wine or whatever you’re serving on them. I like everything to have a place. You can even use them in your bathroom for hand-towels if you want.

SP: Anything else you’d like to add to that? Along with the pitchers, the cutting board and the cocktail napkins, is there anything else you find really helpful to purchase that is great for throwing parties?

LP: Okay, this is cheap and chic... I always say to be prepared. I have people stopping by my house all the time and I always keep a loaf of bread in the freezer. You can get it at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's has great French Bread. Pour olive oil into a dish and balsamic vinegar and some salt and pepper. It’s just easy and great but people think it’s so chic looking.

SP: Do you have a signature dish you like to share when asked to bring something to a get-together?

LP: To be honest, you know what I do when I get invited somewhere and they ask me to bring something? I try something new. I am a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of cook.

SP: What was the last thing you tried for one of those occasions?

LP: I was asked to bring vegetables. So, what I did was I roasted root vegetables, rutabaga, sweet potatoes and thinly sliced Brussels sprouts. I got pizza dough and rolled it out and I grilled it and I put goat cheese on it, lemon zest and thyme. I cut the vegetables thin and layered it on the pizza dough. I brought that and we cut it up like a tart. That is a new thing for me. It was great and it was easy. I tried it out because I had leftover vegetable the other day and I put some with goat cheese on a brown rice tortilla and it was so good I thought Mmmm this would be so good on pizza dough!

SP: What kind of event can one plan that is an ice-breaker between different groups of friends?

LP: Anything that promotes conversation is a good ice-breaker, like these crazy [Normann Copenhagen Rocking glasses] glasses, they are tilted and if someone is sitting next to you and has never seen those before it always brings up conversation. It’s crazy the way they look with wine in them and they are fun! Food and drinks bring people together. So, if you need an ice-breaker it’s always good to put food out even if it’s potato chips.

What was your big first idea for the book?

My house is like a driving cooking school and people are always calling me asking what they should make. Someone text me 10 minutes ago asking how long do Brussels sprouts take and what can I make for dessert and I don’t have any time. I wrote back 15-20 minutes on 400, serve sorbet and basil. The biggest inspiration for the book was people calling or emailing me saying 'oh my god you should write your recipes down' because as I said before I’m a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of cook. I have so much knowledge in entertaining because I grew up with it. My mom was a caterer and my mom would always set beautiful tables every night when we sat down for dinner and from my mom’s point of view everything should look pretty. So I kind of learned that growing up. Then my father passed away and five months later I thought I should just do a book and get this all down. It will be a tribute to my family. I had all of these recipes down regardless so it took me four months but I wrote a proposal with pictures, then my literary agent sent it out, there was a bidding war for it and that was kind of it. To be honest with you, when I started I didn’t know what I was doing at first. I had never written a book before but now it is a best seller and I am going on QVC and it’s kind of exciting!

SP: Yes, that is super exciting! The book has inspired me to have a party at my apartment soon. I just moved in so…

LP: Congratulations!

SP: Thanks. I am excited to try a breakfast meal and have some people over.

LP: Yeah, even the newspaper part [referring to an idea from her book; pick up a couple different papers and a couple fun magazines and have your friends over on a relaxing Sunday morning] you can’t go wrong and you don’t even need to make anything if you don’t want. I want everybody to feel like they can cook or at least make something... but entertaining anybody can entertain.

Decor

SP: For someone looking to decorate their apartment, but cannot afford and interior designer what would your advice be for them?

LP: This would be you…

SP: Yes (laughter).

LP: Okay, first of all that magazine you saw me in Lonny. It has so many great inspiration ideas and colors. Paint one of the rooms, color adds so much life to things and color is one of the least expensive ways to give a room character. I’ve gotten most of the furniture in my house from flea markets or I’ve seen things on the side of the street which I’ve recovered and picked up and put in the back of my car. You can re-upholster and don’t think a piece of furniture is bad because it never is... usually you can do something with it. It’s even like taking that pitcher that I told you about to put flowers in?

SP: Yes.

LP: That puts a smile on your face right away! Fabric is great! You know why I said I went downtown, because that fabric is cheap. I bought that tablecloth fabric for like 12 or 13 dollars and its great! You can get a great patterned fabric and throw it over that round table that you don’t like.

SP: Have you ever traveled somewhere that has left an impression on you and your design style?

LP: Everywhere I go I get inspiration. I’ve traveled a lot. I’d say Armenia, Syria and Beirut were incredible and Israel, those Middle-Eastern countries and the colors. But it kind of depends; I could go to someone’s house and get inspiration. Just walking around Boston I got so inspired. You just see things and it could be the littlest thing, it could be a rock but that inspires you and clicks off something else in your mind.

SP: So blending styles together and making it your own. No matter where you get inspiration?

LP: Yes, make it your own!

SP: Well you make it look effortless! Your place is amazing!

LP: Thank you.

SP: How would you describe your decorating style in a couple of words?

LP: Casual-chic.

SP: The picture of the boat in the bedroom, do you like to spend time on the water? Is that what inspired it?

LP: Yes, I grew up Nantucket in the summer and I love the water!

Grocery shopping at Ikea

I went to Ikea the other day with my sister Jennifer and our friend Trisha. They bought enough for the three of us, so as they were checking out I browsed the grocery store and I picked up a couple of things to try. I bought was pancake mix, coffee grounds & some yummy candy bars. See results below...

I made the pancakes Saturday and topped them with blueberries and powdered sugar. They were so good & I like the coffee too!

On Sunday, I made cookies and used the chocolate bars in the recipe. To make a similar cookie try adding the following to your favorite regular chocolate chip cookie: 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter, one chopped milk chocolate bar and swirl 1 cup of melted semi-sweet chocolate chips into the cookie dough (don't stir too much to keep the swirl look).

This applies to those New Year's Resolutions that go something like... no chocolate, go to the gym six days a week, no reality tv, no eating spoonfuls of peanut butter during Dr. Phil and so on. Sometimes you just need to give yourself a break! I've never been one to make one resolution for the New Year but I do like to think of things I'd like to try or accomplish over the year or things I'd like to try. One of my resolutions and the results will be blogged about in the near future... it has to do with baking and chocolate and peanut butter.

While clearing out a plate size space for dinner at my kitchen table, I noticed a theme in clutter surrounding me including, frames that are in need of artwork, paint brushes, library books (everywhere) & small journals that I write my to-buy list, my to-do list, my book list, my blog list, my budget and ideas for painting... I love having the time and space to be creative. Hopefully I'll also make some time to read those library books and put my Christmas tree away. I am getting over a cold right now, so bed is right around the corner for me.

Book Lust To Go by Nacy Pearl (to find more great books... the inside index is a world map so you can see where the books listed take place. It's like traveling from the comfort of your home through a book).
A Perfect Red by Amy Butler Greenfield (curious how detailed this book would be on the subject of one thing... the color red)
Exley by Brock Clarke (an interesting book from two perspectives so far. It has been along time since I've read a book like that)

Just fell in love with the home of Lulu Powers featured in the December 2010 Lonny issue (online magazines another recent love). What I adore about this home is the mix of masculine to feminine. If I could put label on these rooms it would be historic~charm. I like that mix of tartan plaids, leathers, light pillows and the vase filled with bright pink flowers. In the bedroom, there is a lovely sail boat art piece hung above the crisp white linens with patterned trim & monogrammed pillows which adds a soft touch. If I were to wake up in a home like this, I would enjoy breakfast in bed and then lounge on this sofa and read one of my books or look at one of the many photography books on the book shelf. I would love a big book shelf like that... love. love. love.

Some people call this winter wonderland but I wonder why I live here...? Here is the picture I said I'd post. It continued to snow after I took this picture and today the Mall of America closed...kind of a big deal here. Also, the buses stopped running this afternoon. To my surprise, I did see people on bicycles! I don't think this was a winter activity like cross-country skiing but more so a mode of transportation. At least they weren't getting stuck like all of the cars.

It's snowing here in Minnesota, but I can't help but think back to this picture taken in my parents backyard in the middle of September. I am really into lipstick right now, especially RED and shades of pink with a touch of coral. I used to just wear lip-gloss but then I bought one super red lipstick and want to try more!! For only $28 you can get the Painted Love Lipstick set by Kat Von D at Sephora it’s great way to try different shades to see what you like for yourself. I am wondering if I can go even darker like a wine color shown in Kat Von D’s set. In the reviews it does say that they are super small though. I like Benni000's quote, "The lipsticks are super tiny! I feel like Alice in Wonderland in a Sephora store when I use them". Perfect for a small clutch on a night out.

My yoga mat bags are now up on Etsy and just in time for holiday shopping! My goal is to make stylish and practical yoga bags as unique as the person buying them. My bags have feminine details like ruffles and bows because I am a ruffles and bows kind of gal. My favorite yoga class is yoga sculpt during the week and hot yoga on the weekend. My favorite yoga pose is the shoulder stand. I have yet to try the head stand…

This design shown was inspired by the fabric which is zebra like but a little more abstract. I kept the design simple and chose an accent color for the straps. This bag can be held and worn in a couple of different ways, has a hidden pocket for cards, keys, phone, etc. and has a drawstring closure.

They developed a library of fashion descriptive words and it really makes finding what you are looking for so much easier! I think I might find my perfect motorcycle boots after all! It snowed for the first time this past weekend! I woke up to a snow covered neighborhood and started my morning with going to a cozy coffee shop and then I went to lunch with a friend at a cozy cafe... see a theme here? I scope out all of the cozy spots in Minneapolis come this time of year. I also stopped at another place I find very cozy and that is Anthropology. I was reminded how much I love their Christmas ornaments. My favorite is the Bird Cage ornament.

It is the simple things in life right? Like waking up in the morning and walking over to the coffee maker and knowing your morning is going to get a whole lot better once the coffee hits your lips. My cupboard is full of one-of-a-kind mugs that are 'emotional' or makes me smile when I reach for it because it reminds me of London, or the coffee mug my Aunt sent to me in a care package during college or the one from my Great Grandma that says something funny about good neighbors or the enormous one that has nothing special about it but when I just need a little extra caffeine I reach for it. The Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City is simply stunning! It looks as though it is a modern day castle right in the big city. I love the ceiling lights, the dramatic red drapes, the colorful accents and the gorgeous views. Oh, how I'd love to take a week trip to New York and stay in this hotel. Just me & a carry-on with just enough clothes for the week (lately embracing less is more... especially when packing for trips these days). I would watch cable from bed, grab coffee at some coffee shop and get lost in a book and spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the city. I would love to spend the evening catching up with friends on the beautiful patio. I think the ambiance at this hotel would be amazing!

B. Jones Style is a blog I've been following for a couple of years now. I think she has great style and she really pushes the envelop with surprise elements in her outfitting. I love both of these crochet hem slip dress looks she layers with summer dresses. It is a great way to add a new look to what you already have in your closet. It makes layers even fun in the summer! The slip dress she is wearing is vintage and I've read to keep vintage looking modern wear it with something new. It's not easy finding a slip dress but after a long search I found the Brochu Walker dress pictured below.

Tall Ships

The Tall Ships Challenge was recently in Duluth this summer and I hear it was really cool. These tall ships will be in Chicago this coming weekend on the Navy Pier August 24th- 29th. I think this would be a really fun day trip if you're in the area. I love sailboats and especially ones that look like they are straight out of a historic film. Sailboats are a common sight on Lake Calhoun but not ones like this!?! I'll put this on my bucket list.

I really enjoy walking over my lunch to the library about a 15 minutes away from my office. I can get the books on my waiting list and get outside for a bit for exercise. I really only make time to read on the bus and I am usually getting to bed too late for reading. I would love a couple of days outside on a boat or under a beach umbrella to get lost in a couple of books. Lately I've been thinking I want to pick up a couple of Historic Fiction books. If you were to ask me my favorite season of the year, I'd say summer because summer is what Minnesota is all about! The summers here are about being outdoors, enjoying the warm summer sun and being in your flip-flops! Now if you were talking about fashion, my FAVORITE season is Fall/Winter... closer to the fall side. I absolutely love layers, textured fabrics, tailored jackets, specialty buttons and great leather boots. I was really excited when I stumbled upon this line Alex & Eli. I really like their choice of background and the color of the models lipstick and nail polish but what it's all about is the special details of the cuff of the jackets, the exposed zippers and the fitted trousers. Love it!
